Step 1: Short Vowel Families flashcard deck is the developmentally appropriate first step in learning to read after a student can recognize individual letters and their sounds. This deck of flashcards contains 45 letter families, common combinations of short vowels and consonants that make up many words in the English language.

The Step 2: Consonant Blends and Digraph Families flashcard deck is the developmentally appropriate next step after a student can fluently read the flashcards in Step 1: Short Vowel Families. This Step 2 deck of flashcards contains 49 letter families made up of consonant blends, common combinations of consonants that make up many words in the English language. After a student has learned to read words with individual short vowel and simple consonant combinations, the next step is to teach them short vowel sounds with letter families made up of complex consonant blends found in Step 2.

The Step 3: Long and Irregular Vowel Families flashcard deck is the developmentally appropriate next step after your student is able to fluently read the flashcards in Step 2: Consonant Blends and Digraph Families. This Step 3 deck of flashcards contains 50 letter families made up of vowels with long and irregular sounds, combinations of the letters that make up many words in the English language. After a student has learned to read individual short vowels, consonant blends, and digraph letter combinations, the next step is to teach them the long and irregular vowel letter families found in Step 3.

Practice for 10-15 minutes per day, with the intention of progress not perfection.

Start with the short A words, then proceed with short I, O, U, and finally E.

Select 3 to 5 flashcards, this is your Learning set.

Separate the cards in the deck with the provided separating cards: Learning, Will Learn, Learned. The Learning card goes on top with the working set. Followed by Will Learn. Learned goes on the bottom of the deck.

Go over the same flash card 2 to 3 times, then move onto the next card in the Learning set.

Start with your student sounding out the letter family and example word on the front side of the card with the illustration.

Flip the card and have the student practice saying the listed words out loud.

Once your student says all the words on a card fluently and quickly, place this card under the Learned dividing card at the bottom of the deck.

Add a new card from the Will Learn set to the Learning set.
